Audio visual conferencing has moved to the next step

Communication

Video conferencing has come a very long way since its original creation. Ever since the invention of the television it has been possible to make a connection to enable audio visual conferencing by connecting two closed-circuit television systems. But the difference between the first instances of remote communication involving a visual element, and the status of such communication today, is quite incredible. In fact, it reflects the amazing progress of science and technology as a whole over the past century. Now, though, it seems that conferencing has just taken an extra step forward: we have stepped out of a somewhat two dimensional world – whereby people can be linked as if via a phone line, but with a visual element as something of an extra – into a conferencing world that goes by the name of ‘telepresence’. Telepresence video conferencing is the next stage in business communications. Why?

First of all, let us look back at that two dimensional world of audio visual conferencing that we knew so well before telepresence. Why is it describable as ‘two dimensional’? If you have ever used a web cam to talk with somebody, via Skype, for example, then you will see that not every individual web cam user has the capability of placing their web cam at a point that is close enough to their computer to appear to be looking into their web cam.

The result of this is that the feeling of talking to somebody ‘in person’ is utterly lost. It is impossible to accurately simulate making eye contact, because you need to look away from your web cam to look at the eyes of the person you are speaking to. And this applies even in a one-to-one conversation. You can imagine, then, how hard it must be to create a feeling of ‘really being there’ when it comes to holding a conference with any number of colleagues and associates present.

Telepresence video conferencing consists of a series of technologies that are designed to confront these problems. All of the technology available is used to create a sophisticated simulation of presence, such that it feels like you are actually in a room with associates who could in fact be half way around the earth. As such, telepresence represents the next step forward in audio visual conferencing. While once it seemed a miracle of technology that video conferencing was possible, the earlier technologies now look out-dated in the face of telepresence.

BACS – the end of the cheque

Business, Software

In the days before bacs, payments were made in several ways – most typically by cheque or cash, once a month. Paying money by cash meant a number of problems, not least the presence of a large amount of money on the premises, and the need for workers to collect their wage packages in person. Cheques were a huge improvement, but still relied on a degree of administration, as well as the vagaries of the mail system. In addition, any problems – a missed signature, a bad date – meant delays. BACS payments avoid all of these problems, and almost all larger businesses nowadays have some form of BACS software to facilitate all the payments they need to deliver – whether to clients, employees or suppliers.

Smaller companies can also benefit from BACS software. Of course, the smallest companies may find it easier just to use online banking; if your company is just one or two people and a very small handful of clients, this may be all that is necessary. Payees can be set up and paid one at a time, as and when invoices come in. However, any degree of growth will soon demonstrate that such an ad hoc system can become unmanageable, if only through the sheer number of contacts and their various types. You might manage to keep track of a dozen payees, but what if that expands to a hundred? Sooner or later, it gets too easy to drop the ball. That’s when you start hearing complaints, and even lost business. Apart from anything else, there are the hours taken to deal with all of the accounts this way – it’s just not an efficient use of time.

BACS software can pay for itself pretty quickly in terms of efficiency and peace of mind. The programmes will integrate BACS payments with your existing accounts system, automating the process and ensuring that you pay people the right amount, on time. Payments are quick (three-day standard, or an expedited same-day payment for an additional fee) and secure, and the bacs setup will provide you with an audit trail so that you can track what is being paid when. Funds can be transferred abroad, too, if you wish, so this is a solution suitable for the international company, of whatever extent. As the alternatives – cash and cheque – become less and less widely used, there are few reasons not to bring this capability to your business too.

Care home manager jobs: what they demand

Human Resources

Home manager jobs come in different types, though there is obviously some overlap in the kinds of roles and work you will be expected to fulfil. care home manager jobs, for example, could involve anyone in the spectrum of care, from young to old, disabled, terminally ill, and so on. Nursing home manager jobs will clearly need many of the same skills and training, with a slightly different emphasis. Either way, you will need the same qualities and often qualifications, too. These may be a relevant social work qualification, a nursing diploma, or an NVQ at level 4 in health and social care.

Pay for home manager jobs can differ significantly depending on experience. At the beginning of your career, when you are first qualified, you might expect to earn something in the region of £20,000 – under the national average. However, there is room for advancement, and the most experienced managers might receive £45,000 per year. After that, there are further opportunities, as well; you might progress into area management, overseeing groups of homes or inspecting or training – or even other areas of social work or management. The opportunities are numerous. Plus, it is worth recognising that this is an expanding field. The demand for residential care is only going to increase in the coming years, as the Baby Boom generation collects its pension and a demographic bulge passes into the care system. This ‘pig in the python’, as it has been termed, is a serious worry for the government, who have recently been debating the advantages of various different schemes for funding care during retirement. However it is funded, this is someone else’s headache – as someone looking for a career in home managing, you are likely to have a growing list of jobs to choose from. There is already a shortage of personnel in the area, particularly in the private sector, and the chances are that this is only going to get worse in the short term.

Thus considering searching for home manager jobs is to start on a reliable and hopefully rewarding career – though not one without its challenges. Whether you look for nursing home manager jobs or care home manager jobs, you are going to need much the same skills, experience and qualifications. Some of these can be acquired on the job. However, much of it is about character more than qualifications, so be sure to check you are suited to the role first – perhaps through some work experience or volunteering.

Internship jobs or more formal schemes – how to decide which path is suitable for you

Employment

University students entering their third year might begin to find that their minds turn to graduate jobs and future work plans.  For others, they might find themselves focussing on parties, work and their last opportunity to live a worry-free life without any of the concerns of the ‘real world’.  However, for soon to be graduates who are hoping to apply to graduate scheme at the most desirable employers in the UK, downing vodka in the student union is not the most useful priority for the final months of university.  Even for those who are not interested in the more structured schemes, it is often a sensible idea to think about applying for internship jobs during university holidays, as these can add valuable quality to one’s CV.

Application deadlines for graduate schemes vary from company to company so the best thing to do is to do some research during the summer holidays before your final year of university, when things tend to get very busy, and mark up a calendar with the deadlines of all the graduate jobs you are interested in.  The frustration of finding an ideal job opportunity and then being told that the deadline has passed is something that need not happen.  Is easy to lose track of these dates when term is underway, so it really is worth investing a bit of time finding out when applications need to be made before the time comes.

Similarly, those who are interesting applying for internship jobs may need to send applications before term even starts.  If you are hoping to get a permanent role with the organisation in question after graduating, it could be best to set up an internship for the Christmas holidays.  This way, you are likely to be fresh in the recruiter’s mind when they are thinking about graduate recruitment.  Some of these kind of opportunities are advertised on careers websites, but it is often worth sending a letter to a company of interest, as some employers receive so many speculative applications that they do not need to advertise.

It is possible to begin the academic year full of brilliant ideas about graduate jobs, but the best intentions can easily fall by the wayside in the last year of university.  If you have spent some time applying to graduate scheme and internship jobs, though, you will certainly thank yourself when June comes and you have far more options than you might have done otherwise.
